Alexa is company that gives all the websites a type of ranking that shows how popular the particular website is. This alexa traffic rank is based on the number of alexa toolbar users who visit that website. So clearly it shows that alexa traffic rank is not the best way to estimate a website’s traffic (rank). Why so? If we consider a blogging or webmaster related site, then there is a lot of chance that most of the readers of that website use alexa toolbar. I am sure most of you are having alexa toolbar installed on your browser. But if we consider a personnel blog, then the readers of that blog might not have the toolbar installed. So this will affect the alexa ranking of that blog.
But, then why should you ever try to increase your alexa?
Because it is something that will attract many advertisers to your site. Many advertisers consider alexa ranking for advertising on a blog. Many ad networks also consider alexa ranking when estimating a site’s capabilities. Not only this but, if you have a good alexa ranking then this will certainly impress your readers. So here are the easy steps I take to increase alexa ranking of my sites.
- First of all, if you use firefox, you must install a good addon so that you can find your alexa ranking anytime. A good addon can be Search Status that not only tells you the alexa ranking but also the page rank of the site(page). Or else if you use I.E then install alexa toolbar.
- If you have completed the first step you can set your blog as the home page of your browser.
- Next, if there is any cyber cafe near, just make the administrator set the homepage of all the computers’ browsers as your blog. Or you could do this in your office. The concept is you have to set your blog as the homepage in as many computers as possible.
- Increase traffic to your blog. That is what alexa is all about. So anywhere you respond to the articles, like in forums or blogs, just place the URL of any related article from your blog there in the comments. This will you will attract many visitors since your article is related to the article they are already reading. They will surely want to gain some extra knowledge.
- Show off your alexa ranking on your blog through the alexa rank widget.
- Through your blog suggest your readers to install the alexa toolbar. Doing this can surely increase your ranking because these readers will come again and again to your site. So if they have alexa toolbar your ranking will only go up.
- Also do write about alexa on your site, even I am doing this right now.
- Another way is using alexa autosurf programs. I do not recommend them but many webmasters say it works so you can just give it a try. But don’t forget I don’t recommend this.
So these are the steps I take to increase my alexa ranking. What else do you do.
I read recently that Alexa is no longer including traffic from social media sites like Digg and StumbleUpon in their calculations - that is goign to messs some people up!

Ya I also think that the decision of alexa of not including digg or stumbleupon traffic for the ranking is not good.
